The Tech Support Tango
Kudos to tech support at Qode Interactive: their fix for the oversized banner worked! Apparently the theme files they provide for upload to WP have different “Grid Breakpoints” than those on their demo site. Tech support provided the correct numbers and some direction on where to edit those numbers. However as a newbie to both WordPress and this theme, making those updates would have taken hours longer without the ability to ask E.F. questions along the way.
Now that the fixes are complete, I can move on to editing the primary navigation. My site will be quite a bit simpler than the demo site, so I need to remove items from the top navigation, and redirect those links. How to do that within this theme was confusing. It feels like my brain is trying to create a map of this WordPress/Peggi Theme environment, but there are big blank spaces where the continents should be! There are hours of stumbling ahead of me before any of this becomes recognizable.
An easier task accomplished today was removing demo blog posts and redirecting the blog link to my few, slim posts (I’ve been mostly “posting” in Notes on my iPad until the new theme is in place.) One thing to consider with blog posts is how to categorize them. Categorizing allows visitors to search your blog based on content type. The theme came with categories already in place, but they don’t apply to my specific content so they’ll need to be modified.
The disappearing menu links is an issue I can’t seem to fix, so I’ve submitted another Tech Support ticket and they have responded! They recommend removing the menu items and reimporting the demo content. That fix resolved the disappearing menu issue, but the oversized images remain a problem. So, I’ve sent another ticket to support and I’m crossing my fingers that they have an answer. I could grant tech support access to my WP site and let them try and fix it directly, but I’m hoping that by implementing their fixes myself I’ll learn my way around this world that much faster. Since I don’t want to fiddle with the site until the current issue is resolved, I’m going to redirect my focus to my interview questionnaire. Good-bye for now!
